BELION, N. J. (AP) — The little blue pill may be a boon for patients suffering from erectile dysfunction, but some doctors say they haven’t heard of the blockbuster drug that has transformed a growing market for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Viagra, a once-a-day drug for men who don’t have erectile dysfunction, has been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for its treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In its first year of approval, the drug was approved for use by doctors, who are largely blinded to the side effects of the other drugs in the class. The drug’s maker, Pfizer, will begin selling its generic version at an accelerated discount to its branded version.
Viagra and its brand-name version, Levitra, are sold by most drugstores as standard ED drugs and have not been approved for use by the FDA.
Some doctors say they’ve taken a break from the drug because they didn’t feel well enough to take Viagra. Others say they believe that Viagra is still being marketed as a cheaper alternative to ED drugs, which can be expensive and have to be taken daily.
“I’m not sure if I’m getting it right now. I just don’t want to be,” said Dr. Mark D. Henning, chief medical officer at Lenox Hill Hospital in Elkins, Ill.
Viagra is a drug that helps men with erectile dysfunction — a condition where the penis doesn’t make enough blood vessels in the penis to fill with blood — to have sex. Doctors typically start with a dose of 10 mg once daily, a dose that lasts from four to five days. The drug also has a longer half-life of about 17 hours, which means that patients can take it daily without problems.
The drug works by helping the body get and keep an erection when sexual stimulation occurs. But it’s also more difficult to treat than other ED drugs. The drug’s side effect profile includes erectile dysfunction, low blood pressure, nausea, and sleepiness.
Some doctors say they’ve seen little difference between their drugs over the years, and that Viagra’s side effects were often the main reason for its approval.
“I think the vast majority of men in our country have been able to get this drug,” Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, a urologist at New York University Medical Center, said in a conference call Tuesday. “I’ve seen a small percentage of men who have tried Viagra.”
The drug, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, was first approved by the FDA in 1998.
Doctors began prescribing it only after the drug was developed as a treatment for enlarged prostate and benign prostatic hyperplasia, a type of enlarged prostate.
Many men who took the drug had problems with erections during sex. Others had problems with ejaculation before sex.
The drug can last for as long as five to seven years after the men stop taking it.
Those men who take the drug should see a doctor regularly to ensure they’re not taking too much of the drug.
Dr. Mark Henning, a Lenox Hill hospital-commissioned urologist, said he’s seen men who take the drug for an average of seven months.
“I’ve seen men who take Viagra. I’ve seen a lot of men that are able to get an erection,” he said.
He said that some men with ED who have trouble achieving or maintaining an erection can take the drug for an additional six to eight weeks to get the full benefits of the drug.
Other men who may take the drug are also looking for ways to improve their sexual satisfaction, said Dr. Michael E. Rosen, a urologist and professor of urology at Northwestern University in Chicago. He said that while some men have tried Viagra before, the drug has shown no effect on their sexual performance.
Viagra is often used to treat erectile dysfunction, and people who have trouble getting or maintaining an erection are usually prescribed another drug to help them. People with mild erectile dysfunction can take Viagra for a longer period of time to treat the condition, but doctors aren’t sure when.
Viagra has also been used by some men as part of a treatment program to treat impotence.
Viagra 50mg tablet contains an active component such as Sildenafil. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra may have side effects, including headache, flushing, dizziness, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and vision changes. It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. Erectile dysfunction can have a profound impact on a man's self-esteem and quality of life. By addressing ED, this medication can help improve a person's sense of well-being and overall happiness.
Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. The sexual activity itself can strain the heart and can further increase the strain by increasing blood flow. Consult with a healthcare professional to assess the risks and benefits in such cases. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.
